Blueberries

I live in Utah so fresh and blueberries are not two words that really go together. I buy blueberries every once in a while when the price is low just to get the taste, but I know that much of the nutrients are gone by the time they reach this pretty, great state. I buy frozen blueberries because I have more faith the nutrients are still there, assuming they were quick frozen as the bag claims. And I used to enjoy these frozen blueberries in oatmeal and plain yogurt and felt good about the antioxidant boost I was serving myself even if I really didn't get much flavor.

I was in Oregon a few weeks back and had the opportunity to pick fresh blueberries. What an experience! Blueberries everywhere! And the flavor was more exquisite than I had ever imagined! I ate many many berries while I was picking and I picked a lot. I ate more that night and the next morning and the next day. They were so good I couldn't stop. I bought vanilla ice cream and simply added a bunch of blueberries to a bowl of soft vanilla ice cream and I was in heaven! I even did this at 3 am by myself so I wouldn't have to share... Bad me... But it was oh so good...

So I thought back on this because here I am back in Utah. For lunch today I just had my plain nonfat yogurt with some frozen blueberries. I feel good that i am eating blueberries because I know they are good for me. But where is the flavor??! I have been spoiled and now I want the flavor, not just the health benefits! Oh sweet blueberries that fall from the splendid and overfilled bushes in Oregon, how I dream of you and what I would do with you if only I could have my way with you... vanilla ice cream is calling both our names...
